In 1997, an auction was held to sell the Frederick Gutelius House. Several members of the community showed up, all historically-minded, but having no intent on purchasing the property. As discussion grew about the history of the log house, and its original owners, the Gutelius', the conversation turned toward the buyer's intent to tear the house down for its logs.

A decision was made on the spot, thanks to nearby neighbors  who offered to put up the money for this 1803 house. Our local Justice of the Peace did the bidding. This was a meaningful, as Frederick Gutelius was appointed the first Justice of the Peace of Union County. The small group quickly gathered, set about raising money and becoming incorporated. Preservation Mifflinburg Inc. became its name.

Preservation Mifflinburg, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed in 1997. It is made up of volunteers interested in preserving the history of our past.

Restoration of the Gutelius House is dependent on the organization being the recipient of funding from grants and personal donations.

The organization conducts tours, has the house available for small meetings, and displays articles collected from the area, many of which have been donated by local residents.

Volunteers are always needed to help with the restoration of the house as well as ongoing operations.
